7 And the LORD said to Joshua, "Today I will begin to exalt you in the eyes of all Israel, so they may know that I am with you as I was with Moses. 8 Tell the priests who carry the ark of the covenant: 'When you reach the edge of the Jordan's waters, go and stand in the river.'
A few chapter before this passage, God revealed himself to Joshua and explained to him that He was going to raise him up as a successor to Moses. God also explained to Joshua that he was going to lead the people into the promised land and that no matter how difficult or scary the journey became, he was to not be afraid at any moment and put His faith and trust in God to sustain him at all times. I am sure we have all related to Joshua's story and been encouraged by this recorded interaction between Joshua and God. In fact, i have read over this passage many a time. However, recently there has been one sentence that has grabbed my attention and has caused me to give this event in recorded history a second look. You see, in the midst of the great promotion that Joshua received and the amazing pep talk from the God of all Creation, Joshua still had to do his part to follow through to get to the promised land. When they got to the river, which by the way, happened to be at flood stage, flowing with rippling current and presenting danger at every corner, they had to first step into it before it parted to show them the way across and confirm that God was indeed with them. Did you catch that? They had to put their faith into action in order to walk out God's perfect plan for their life. This is so key! Can you imagine the conversations or the thoughts that Joshua and the twelve men from the tribe of Israel had when they approached the river at flood stage? "Did you hear right Joshua?" "If God really wanted us to do this wouldn't he part the waters now and show us the way before we put ourselves in danger?" "Logic tells me that this would be the worst time possible to cross the river, this can't be God's will." I wonder if at times we live in a fantasy land and believe that at all times God's will for our lives will be flashed in the sky with beaming bright letters and the road we need to take will be paved with a red carpet. What if, the only difference between where we are and where God wants us to be is the scary, uncomfortable, or illogical decision that we need to make.
Don't let anything hold you back from living in the abundant life that God has planned for you. Take a step of faith today and watch God take you in a direction in which you have never been before. Buckle up and hold on tight, its going to be the ride of your life. CAUTION: it's not for the faint of heart!
